A 30-minute commute each way adds up to 5 hours of potential vocabulary review time per week. Most people spend that time on social media. Here is how to use commute time for vocabulary review effectively across different commute types.
Push Notification Review (All Commute Types)
The easiest approach - works for driving, cycling, walking, and public transit. Configure vocabulary push notifications in TransLearn, Anki, or Lingvist to deliver 5-10 reviews throughout the day. Some notifications arrive during your commute naturally.
For driving: glance at the notification at red lights. For walking or transit: read each one and attempt to recall before seeing the answer. Each review takes 10 seconds. No special commute session setup required - the notifications reach you wherever you are.
Setup: in TransLearn, go to Settings > Notifications, set frequency to 5-10 per day and time window 8am-9pm. Words from your reading vocabulary list are reviewed automatically.
Anki Flashcard Review (Bus, Train, Subway)
Open Anki during public transit commutes and work through due cards. A 20-minute train commute covers 30-50 card reviews using the SuperMemo 2 spaced repetition algorithm - the cards that need review most urgently appear first, and reviewing them during the commute counts toward your daily review quota.
For the best experience: use AnkiMobile (iOS) or AnkiDroid (Android), enable offline mode so decks work without cellular, and use Anki decks that include native speaker audio for the target language.
Audio Vocabulary Review (Driving, Cycling)
For commutes where looking at a screen is not practical: audio flashcard decks in Anki include spoken word cards in most major language decks available on AnkiWeb. Alternatively, vocabulary-focused podcasts (Innovative Language's series for 30+ languages, Language Transfer audio courses) deliver vocabulary in audio form.
For passive vocabulary exposure during driving: News in Slow (Spanish, French, German, Italian), Slow German, NHK Web Easy Radio (Japanese), and RFI Savoirs (French) are designed for language learners at B1-B2 level.
Combined Commute Stack
The most effective commute vocabulary setup combines active and passive review:
- Audio: play target language podcast or radio as background listening
- Active: respond to push notification vocabulary reviews when they arrive
- 2-3 times per week: open Anki during transit for a focused 10-15 minute review session
This stack provides both comprehensible input (building vocabulary through listening) and retrieval practice (push notifications and flashcard review). Together, a 30-minute commute delivers consistent vocabulary progress without requiring you to give up entertainment entirely.
Consistency Over Sessions
The commute vocabulary habit works because of frequency, not intensity. Reviewing 10 words five days per week produces significantly better retention than reviewing 50 words once per week - even though the total word count is the same. The distributed practice effect means commute reviews, spaced throughout the week, build more durable vocabulary than weekend study sessions.
